Humans possess a unique cognitive ability: not only can we represent the world directly, but we can also represent representations themselves. This capacity, known as metarepresentation, allows us to infer and reason about others’ mental states as well as public representations such as language, images, and symbols. In this course, we will explore the different types of metarepresentation, examine how they function and differ from one another, and consider how this ability may have evolved.
