Between the mid-18th and mid-19th centuries, literature prominently addressed women's opportunities and life options, including women from multiple racial backgrounds. In this class we will read texts written by women or published anonymously that center female protagonists and/or address women's political and social concerns – from Judith Sargent Murray's "On the Equality of the Sexes" (1770) to the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention, largely considered the first women's rights convention. The course readings will include literature by Black and White women, texts that question rigid gender binaries, and texts that allow for a study of the intersections of gender and race, enslavement, and colonialism.
