Kursinhalt: Selecting, translating and analyzing texts is a core task of Area Studies. How we translate is determined by both theoretical and practical considerations. In other words, theory and practice are closely interrelated aspects of translation. Against this backdrop, this course will introduce some key terms in translation studies, such as source and target language, foreignization and domestication, and equivalence. Related to this, we will look at some theoretical frameworks that are relevant for Area Studies, such as the Skopos theory, postcolonial translation, cultural translation, and others. On the basis of the terminological and theoretical introduction, we will discuss methodological issues relating to the translation of texts in Area Studies contexts. In addition, we will look at methodological issues of translation criticism, i.e. the analytical engagement with translated texts.
Lernziele: At the end of the term, the students will understand key terms of translation studies and they are able to relate these to different theoretical frameworks. They will have acquired practical knowledge as to how to integrate translations into academic analyses and will have a deepened understanding of translation criticism as a possible field of academic specialization.
Kursbewertung: For a confirmation of attendance, students are expected to attend regularly and complete one oral/written assignment before the end of the term.
