This course investigates British literature from the mid-19th century onwards to consider its aim to look at the every-day, often mundane aspects of life and describe life 'as it really is’, engaging especially with questions on the representation of labour and social class in Britain. While much of the literature we read will be concerned with the period of industrialisation in Britain, over the course of the seminar we will move on to the later 20th century to think about the relationship between fiction and late-stage capitalism. The texts we read in the seminar will largely consist of prose fiction but also include plays and films.
Important note: This course is offered at two different times: Tuesdays at 2-4 p.m. and Tuesdays at 4-6 p.m. Please register for the group that fits your schedule. If both groups fit your schedule, register for both; this way your chances to gain a spot in the course will be higher.
