In this seminar, we will look at forms of postwar Black British writing that were and are considered radical and experimental. We will further engage various media, from the novel such as Shola von Reinhold’s Lote, to the poem, to political texts/manifestos (Experiments in Imagining Otherwise by Lola Olufemi), to musical lyrics, film and stories written in abbreviated text/internet language. We will engage these forms of expression, taking into consideration their historicisation, placing them within their political and social context in order to understand the conditions under which such forms emerge. This seminar will be collaborative, in that it will be heavily discussion based, although it will also involve reading, listening, watching and writing. We will work together to follow our interests, and although there is structure to this course, we will be encouraged to ‘follow our noses’ and let our curiosity guide us.
