This course offers an introduction to the history of Christianity in India in the 20th century. Christian churches have existed in India since ancient times – Thomas Christians trace their origins back to the Apostle Thomas and have traditionally been part of the Syrian Orthodox churches. Today, there is a wide variety of Christian churches, communities and traditions in India. In this course, we will look at the people, places and practices and examine them from both a sociological and a historical perspective. The course aims to unsettle received ideas about Christianity, modernity and colonialism by looking at trans-regional exchanges and socio-economic contradictions. We aim to introduce the students to the diversities of Christian life-making in India and also discuss its theoretical and political value for current times.

Hinweise zu Prüfungen und Scheinen: Voraussetzung für eine erfolgreiche Teilnahme ist die regelmäßige Mitarbeit sowie die Anfertigung kleiner schriftlicher Ausarbeitungen während des Semesters. Alle schriftlichen Arbeiten (Hausarbeiten/Quellenanalysen/"Essays") müssen bis spätestens zum 30.9.2027 eingereicht werden. Später eingereichte Arbeiten werden nicht mehr angenommen. Einreich-Termine sind jeweils der 30.9. und der 30.4. jeden Jahres.
