In these two courses we prepare an encounter with our partner groups from Warsaw and Oregon/D.C.. All four groups will have the same general program and we will meet in-person or virtually to discuss everybody's project and research. Which will be the following:
The 2024 Transatlantic Students Symposium examines Climate Change, Ecology and the Anthropocene. The increasing intensity, severity, and frequency of environmental-ecological disasters in the last decades has brought greater urgency in discussions surrounding climate change, environmental justice, and the Anthropocene. We will cover a variety of theoretical approaches from postcolonial ecocriticism, ecofeminism, to studies related to the Anthropocene. We will also discuss some fictional work, such as narrative texts and movies. Moreover, we will explore Berlin’s Anthropocene by walking the city and a kayak/canoe tour of the Spree. Some of the theoretical work we will read in class are, among others, Timothy Morton, Alison Kafer, Max Liboiron, Rob Nixon and others.
The course will take place in the classrooms, but it will possibly include formats such as colloquia, digital forums, student-run workshops – partly with our partners in Warsaw and Oregon and D.C.. As part of the seminar we will also do some field work – exploring specific scenes of interest in Berlin.
The course will culminate in the 22th Transatlantic Students Symposium to be held in May 2024 in the coal mining districts of Silesia.
Course requirements include active class participation, in-class presentations (spezielle Arbeitsleistungen), independent project work and a symposium presentation (MAP).
