In this seminar, we are going to read four of Shakespeare’s history plays: Richard II, Henry IV Parts 1 and 2, and Henry V. The course offers an introduction to Shakespeare’s oeuvre, but also allows us to explore more generally the conditions of writing and staging plays in early modern England. The plays mentioned above explore early modern concerns that are still relevant today: they pose questions about history and succession, about leadership, government and tyranny and about power and spectacle. Furthermore, they address family relations and concerns around masculinity and explore different social milieus.
