This tutorial aims to combine ecocritical and queer analysis on samples of contemporary speculative fiction with a focus on queerness in relation to ‘environment’ and other constructs such as ‘nature’, ‘human’ and ‘kinship’. In the context of the intersectional background of the tutorial and in combination with a selection of theoretical texts read alongside the primary sources, we seek to understand how contemporary literature and film can question binary concepts if not rendering them obsolete, by showing the limitedness of the human conception of the world and offering alternative, “weird” narratives instead. Among others, we’ll be discussing the novels "Annihilation" (2014) by Jeff VanderMeer, "A Psalm for the Wild Built" (2021) by Becky Chambers, "Open Throat" (2023) by Henry Hoke and various forms of "Wicked". Students from all departments are welcome! Texts and communication will be in English.
