New York City has exerted, and continues to exert, tremendous fascination on newcomers and long-term residents alike. But is it "still the promised city?" as a study already asked in 1996? What about gentrification, the persistence of racism, sexism, hetero- and cissexism, class inequality, ableism, and homelessness? The effects of Covid? The ascendancy of far right politics?
In this course, we will discuss twenty-first century representations of New York City by authors such as Paul Auster, Alyssa Cole, Teju Cole, Mira Jacob, and Zeyn Joukhadar to see how contemporary texts portray the city's complex, multi-faceted social and cultural dynamics, and which formal strategies they employ for doing so.
Requirements for credit include regular attendance, participation in class discussions, and the organization of one session (together with fellow students).
