Seminar (2 SWS; 4 LP)
Lektürekurs (1 SWS; 4 LP)
The seminar discusses early modern comedies, from the time of Shakespeare to the restoration period. In addition to reading actual comedies, we explore poetic theory and staging conventions and discuss different forms of comedy and modes of the comic. Comic engagements with passion, morality, social life and economics will all form part of our discussions. Comedy allows us to address questions about early modern practices of gender and crossdressing, to interrogate early modern concepts of social place and social mobility and to reflect on changing commercial structures.
