Completion of CM06: select four different seminars (free choice) in “Special Topics in Psychology” in semester 3 and 4.
Psychological research heavily relies on methods that facilitate drawing meaningful inferences from data. In this seminar, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of examining statistical methods, including but not limited to Type I-error rate, power rate, consistency, efficiency, robustness, unbiasedness, and identification. The application of these quality criteria will be explored through hands-on experience using Monte-Carlo simulation in R. Upon mastering the fundamentals of evaluating psychological methods, students will be guided, either by the lecturer or through interactions with Chat GPT, to implement their own estimation methods (within the general linear model, structural equation modeling [SEM], etc.) and/or students will be encouraged to conduct their own simulation studies, where they examine at least one of the quality criteria of the methods (i.e., Type I-error rate, power rate, consistency, efficiency, and robustness). This practical approach aims to equip students with the skills and insights necessary for independent and rigorous psychological research and the development and examination of their methods. Requirements: basic knowledge of statistical inference from a frequentists’ perspective and R.
