Understanding how the brain enables cognition represents a key challenge in human neuroscience. Conversely, cognitive performance is impaired in a wide range of neurological disorders, including neuroinflammatory, degenerative, and post-viral conditions such as the recent post-Covid syndrome. In this seminar, we will introduce various tools to assess cognitive performance quantitatively – from classical neuropsychological tests to modern-day applications of Virtual Reality. We will illustrate the applications of these tools in clinical studies from our own group and will discuss the strengths and limitations of current methods in linking cognitive performance to neuroimaging markers of brain structure and function.
