Erste Lesegruppe: 16. April 2024 (Diskussion der Einleitung von Fishers "Statistical Methods for Research Workers").
Dieser Kurs ist rein freiwillig. Es werden KEINE ECTS-Punkte vergeben!

Voluntary reading group, open to students/Ph.D. candidates/postdocs, on the topic of "History and Philosophy of Statistics."
We will explore among others the works of Ronald R. Fisher, one of the founders of modern statistics. Using three of his books summarized in [1], along with other publications on the history and present of statistics and its integration into applied sciences, we will discuss concepts, philosophical foundations, and the role and responsibility of mathematical statistics for other disciplines. A main topic will be the debate and disagreements between Neyman-Pearson and Fisher on statistical hypothesis tests, which remains relevant today in the context of the reproducibility of science and the ongoing discussion around p-values [2], as well as various new concepts such as e-values.
Your own suggestions (articles, topics, questions, etc.) for active participation are very welcome and can be sent to fabian.telschow@hu-berlin.de.
Language: German/English, depending on the needs of the participants.
